Many of these courses bridge disciplines to spark unique perspectives and challenge students to solve problems in new and unexpected ways. The College of Arts and Science offers featured courses each semester to provide students the opportunity to engage with some of the most significant and pressing issues of our time. “When I saw this special session, I thought, ‘Wow, this is my way of fulfilling my childhood dreams.’” “This is why I decided to come to Vanderbilt-to have access to incredible professionals like Dr. Thorpe was equally impressed by Jani’s credentials and jumped at the opportunity to learn from him. “Where else (other) than Vanderbilt can you take a class that has a guy of this level and at this young age?” “Professor Jani was on the team that discovered gravitational waves,” said Fortner, who graduated in May 2023 with a degree in mechanical engineering. The course is focused on his research specialty of black holes and gravitational waves. Jani created the course ASTR 3890: Black Holes in Our Universe and opened it to all undergraduates with no prerequisites. He welcomes student workers, but because so many undergraduates across Vanderbilt express an interest in space, he feels called to share his research with a wider audience-what he calls a “renaissance and revolution in astronomy.” Karan Jani (center) and students from ASTR 3890: Black Holes in Our Universe, learned a lot and had fun! (Submitted photo) Jani said most of his time is spent doing research in his lab. “”The quietness on the moon is almost spiritual, opening our learning to new cosmic sounds, which can neither be accessed on earth or in space.” SHARING ASTRONOMY “A gravitational wave experiment is so sensitive that an earthquake in Australia impacts our measurement in Louisiana,” Jani said. LILA will access lower frequencies of gravitational waves, which cannot be accessed by LIGO because of earth’s seismic noise. Gravitational wave experiments need complete silence to be fully successful, Jani said. He is leading a global team of experts and industry partners, including NASA, to build the Laser Interferometer Lunar Antenna-a first-of-its-kind experiment on the surface of the moon. Jani continues his cutting-edge work on black holes and gravitational waves as head of Vanderbilt’s Lunar Labs Initiative. LUNAR LABS INITIATIVE Karan Jani’s experiments will travel with NASA on its Artemis moon mission. The observatories are designed to detect cosmic gravitational waves and enable multi-messenger observations to understand what happens when black holes collide. LIGO Livingston is one of two such observatories in the United States and spans roughly six square miles in Livingston, Louisiana. Jani worked with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, better known as LIGO, on the discovery. Their discovery of gravitational waves led to the team receiving the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2016, and Jani was named a Top 30 Under 30 by Forbes magazine. Einstein surmised that there are gravitational waves in space caused by massive movement that creates ripples in the “fabric” of space-time.Ī century after Einstein first revealed his theory, Jani and his colleagues found proof. Jani was specifically driven to research Albert Einstein’s 1916 Theory of General Relativity. Representation of a gravitational wave used in student website project (Submitted) NASA describes a black hole as being “a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out.” When black holes collide and merge, this violent process sends ripples surging through the fabric of space, making gravitational waves. Jani, assistant professor of physics and astronomy and Cornelius Vanderbilt Dean’s Faculty Fellow, said his own childhood dreams of space led him to dive into physics after high school, with a focus on black holes and gravitational waves. These students and others with diverse majors may not become astronauts or astronomers, but they were given an opportunity to join a special class led by Vanderbilt astrophysicist Karan Jani, one of the scientists who discovered gravitational waves. Karan Jani, assistant professor of physics and astronomy (Vanderbilt University) Law, history and society major Ethan Thorpe had similar notions throughout his childhood, scouring astronomy websites and imagining life as an astrophysicist. Engineering major Adam Fortner has spent many nights camping outside his Kentucky home, staring up at the stars and dreaming about space.

In doing so, it allows time for the ventricles to fill with blood. The AV node slows down the electrical signals and then sends them on to the ventricles. The electrical impulses continue to the atrioventricular (AV) node, which is a cluster of cells. This contraction pushes blood into the ventricles. Each one triggers an individual heartbeat.Īs the electrical impulses leave the sinoatrial node, they cross the atria, making the atrial muscles contract. The heart has a natural pacemaker, called the sinoatrial node, in the right atrium. There are left and right atria and ventricles. The human heart consists of four chambers: the atria, which are the two upper chambers, and the ventricles, which are the two lower chambers. What is arrhythmia? Atria, ventricles, and the electrical circuitry of the heart This is called tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. When the muscle is beating too fast, it can cause weakening or “tiring out” of the heart muscle over time. The pressure in the lungs can also go up, leading to fluid accumulation. Blood flow to the rest of the body, including the heart, reduces. When the heart beats too rapidly, it pumps less efficiently. When tachycardia is present, either the upper or lower chambers - or both - beat significantly faster. Some people can also have an exaggerated response to exercise, and that is also considered a type of tachycardia. Factors such as age and fitness levels can affect it. In adults, the heart usually beats between 60 and 100 times per minute.ĭoctors usually consider a heart rate of over 100 beats per minute to be too fast. Tachycardia refers to a high resting heart rate. Microwave links are are widely used for point-to-point communications because their small wavelength allows conveniently-sized antennas to direct them in narrow beams, which can be pointed directly at the receiving antenna. Its turning circle, at 40 to 42.6 feet (depending on wheel size), is as much as 7.8 feet wider than the RAV4’s. At 187.8 inches long, the Chevrolet Equinox is noticeably larger than competitor compact crossover SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazdfa CX-5 and Ford Escape. Still, the size is bound to turn away some shoppers. It’s aged well since it debuted in summer 2009, and next year’s 2016 face-lift will change little (click here to see early details). The Equinox’s face courts little controversy, with Chevrolet’s familiar two-bar grille and perky headlights leading into a plus-sized profile. We tested a midlevel Equinox 1LT against six competitors in ’s $28,000 Compact SUV Challenge, which you can see here. The Equinox’s multimedia system gets subscription-based Wi-Fi for 2015, but other changes are minimal. (Chevrolet and GMC are sibling brands under parent company GM.) This time of year a coolant leak is a whole lot easier to live with, imho. How much is it leaking? I am living with a small leak in my radiator. The Internet said that an externally leaking head gasket is rare/nonexistent, and that its more likely to be a hose, radiator cap, or the water pump. If I were you I would only do this as a last resort (ready to junk the car), and if I were me I wouldn't. So, every two years or 30,000 miles coolant should be replaced. Car owners usually, don’t maintain their cooling systems, as well as they should. They go into an aluminum block and have been known to strip. Coolant leaks from either hose connections or from the cylinder head, due to overheating. They are stretch to yield and when they stretch too far they snap. I am really glad I did it and did it myself.Īs far as tightening up the head bolts, dicey. I have seen as high as 32mpg with it, and it runs good. I didn't have any machine work (resurfacing, valves, valve stem seals) done on the head, and it now has about 9K miles on it since the repair. Since you demonstrated your proficiency in doing the crossover gaskets, I bet you could do the head gasket. Like I said in my post about my head gasket, I would seriously consider replacing the timing chains and tensioners, and that's another couple hundred in parts. Then you would need parts - the cheapest head gaskets are about $50 each, $50 for the head bolts per head, and you would probably have other parts needing replacement. Would that be a possible fix?īook time is about 13 hours shop labor for one, 18 for both (and a shop would likely recommend both). I am curious - where exactly is the leak? Pics?ĭoes anybody have any idea what a mechanic would charge for this effort? Or is there some easy way of solving this problem? A co-worker suggested I remove the Cam-Cover and snug-down the head bolts. And as I suspected, there is a little leakage coming from the front head gasket.major Bummer! GM 6.First I cleaned the suspect area with pressure washer to get all the greasy build-up away. Head Gasket Leaks – Engine Overheating Is Often The First Sign Of Trouble White Stuff, Under My Oil Filler Cap – What Is It ? Consequently, external, you can usually see the leak. So, head gasket leaks, can be external or internal. So, pre Ignition/detonation is probably, the most common cause, of head gasket failures today.Īs a result, all of these factors can lead to, permanent damage of the metal parts in your engine. Some operating conditions, can cause even the best head gasket to fail. Regardless of what type of head gasket is used or how carefully it is installed. Similar leaks can also be caused, by hairline cracks in the cylinder head or engine block. So, an internal coolant leak doesn’t always mean, you have head gasket leaks.

David Bowman when he killed HAL in the groundbreaking 1968 film goes on the auction block next month. It is a symbol heavy with optimism that humans will survive their tendency toward self-destruction at least long enough to make the jump from their state in 2001 that is equitable with the leap that was made on a desolate landscape millions of years earlier. The elusive ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ spacesuit believed to have been worn by Dr. The transformation of astronaut Dave Bowman into a star child floating in orbit over earth is final evolutionary step presented in the film. In the blink of an eye, the bone has transformed from mere prop to a symbol invested with all the entire evolutionary history of the human species. The single most iconic image from the film is the transformation of a pre-historic bone throw into the air that turns into a spaceship as it begins its fall back to earth. The cosmic influence may be divine or perhaps it may be aliens so advanced as to seem divine, but the dance of the cosmos is clearly not entirely coincidental. The symbolism of planet, satellite and stars coming into rare moments of perfect spatial situation is one that carries an intense suggestion of a cosmic plan for humanity on some level. The alignment of heavenly bodies accompanies key moments in man’s evolution in the film. HAL thus becomes a symbol for the frustration felt by anyone who can’t get to their destination because the car broke or who can’t get vital information to someone because their cell phone battery has died. In the absence of the ability to perform the processes that ensure they don’t die, they have quite literally put their lives in the hands of a machine. The astronauts have essentially turned over the most primitive requirements for their survival to the machine. Beyond that, however, it is in the area of the astronaut’s dependence upon the computer on a more primitive level that is more to the point. The computer that runs the Discovery spaceship has also become an iconic symbol of man’s technology turning on its creators. Of course, the monolith has also become an iconic symbol for the unknowable mysteries of the universe. The precise literal meaning of the monolith is never adequately explained, but suffice to say that it is infused with symbolic associations to knowledge and intellectual progress. The central symbol and recurring motif in the film is the big black monolith that heralds important evolutionary moments in the development of the human species.
